Today in my government class, I was witness to a pathetic display.

A few weeks back, I noticed in the row ahead of me a guy and a girl awkwardly holding hands while the prof was lecturing and they were taking notes. I saw this and was somewhat disgusted. How low does their self-esteem have to be to need to be in constant physical contact...
Well that was a few weeks ago.

Today, I was sitting in class and happened to be directly behind the same two people.

They started passing a note back and forth, and I was compelled to watch, read, and record the goings on.

It started when she pulled out a sheet of notebook paper, wrote three words, and passed it to him. It was then passed back and forth throughout class, and from my vantage point, I could read every word. Being disgusted, I copied down the note and recorded their actions in my pocket notepad.

Her: I love you.
Him: I love you more. What color are your undies?
Her: Orange and pink. I don't have yellow.
Him: I'll buy you some.

At this point, he slipped his hand between her crossed legs so his hand was resting on the top/inside of her upper thigh.
Later, the held hands for three minutes while the teacher was lecturing.
She wore a ring on her the middle finger of her left hand. The ring was silver or white gold and had three stones, A light purple jewel surrounded by two stones that appeared to be diamonds, but it was impossible to tell for sure.
I don't know what significance the ring may have, if you do, please let me know.
Later, she began pulling out strands of her hair and placing them on his desk.
They then held hands again, and then played thumb-wars.
Later she pulled a pen from his mouth and held it for ransom.
Of course, they continued to hold hands off and on for the rest of class.

What would cause people to do that kind of stuff in class? Granted, they may be freshman and high-school sweethearts, but I do not understand it. It seemed that she needed the constant reminder that she has a boyfriend. As if her world would crumble if he dissapeared for a second.

The note is also another scary idicator of her low self-esteem. She needed him to tell her that he loved her right then, to validate her self-worth.

I don't think this kind of blind reliance on another person is healthy. She is the type of girl that will become bulimic if he says she has put on weight.

What events in her past could cause her to act this way?

It's sad and pathetic.
